At Joseph Machine Company, Zero Scrap Optimization is more than a software algorithm — it’s a system-level engineering approach that leverages intelligent machine control, precision mechanics, and innovative saw design to reduce cut waste to the absolute theoretical minimum.

How It Works

Every cut costs material. On a part with two 45° angle cuts, most saws lose at least one kerf per cut — which more than doubles the scrap produced by cutting alone.

A Joseph Machine saw loses zero on the leading-edge cut, zero on the trailing-edge cut, and a single kerf of 0.22 inches on the middle cut. Where two middle cuts meet, one kerf serves both.

Two mechanisms working together

The saw design does half of it: a custom gripper paired with a saw oriented so the inside surface of the blade meets the bottom point of the cut without taking any length off the extrusion. We released the first Zero Scrap Technology™ for lineal processing around twenty years ago.

The pusher movement logic does the other half: on a ProCut infeed, the servo pusher positions and repositions the part between cuts, pushing and pulling so the triangle of material between the two blades is recovered rather than dropped as scrap. Neither mechanism alone gets you there.

Compound miters

The sharper example. Traditionally you would use an end head machine and lose two to three inches per cut. A Joseph saw achieves a compound miter without losing any length on the lineal.

What to demand when you evaluate equipment

A certain amount of waste from your saw is unavoidable, but you should not accept a material yield lower than 99.5% from the machine itself. Ask any OEM how much lineal length is lost with each cut, and hold them to a number.
